The Derby

The Derby bowler is the classic urban style hard felt hat with a round crown and a small, shaped, curved brim. It was originally created by the Bowler Brothers in London during the mid-1850s in response to the request for a more practical alternative to the top hat. In case you wondered, it is also known as a Derby, made popular by the Earl of Derby (19th century England). This classic hat has been popular since the Victorian Era for people of all backgrounds and lifestyles and is often considered to be the hat style that dominated the West – despite the popularity of the “Cowboy” hat. 

We make two styles, to your preference: the Victorian and the Urban.

General hat specifics for the Victorian style include a 2” brim and a 5” crown height (to the center). This hat comes standard with a pencil roll and bound edge, in your choice of colors. If desired, the brim can be increased to 2 ½”.

General hat specifics for the Urban style include a 2” brim and a 4-4 ½” crown. As with the Victorian, this hat comes standard with a pencil roll and a bound edge, in your choice of colors. If desired, the brim width can be increased to 2 ½”.
